What is Hemp?

Hemp is one of the oldest domesticated crops known to man. It has been used for thousands of years to make paper, rope, canvas and clothing. A piece of hemp fabric is the earliest relic of the textile industry, dating back to about 8,000 B.C. Hemp in the form of seeds, oil, protein powder and even hemp milk, has been discovered to be a superfood. That's good news for people and our pets!

Hemp sold at health food stores is called “industrial hemp” and is non-psychoactive. Although hemp and cannabis do come from the same species, they are genetically different. Dietary hemp can be legally sold and consumed in all 50 states of the USA.

Top Benefits of Hemp for Dogs

Excellent source of Linoleic Acid: Hemp seeds contain high levels of the essential omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid, which is a polyunsaturated fatty acid. Linoleic acid is the most important omega-6 fatty acid for dogs because it is used to produce other omega-6 fatty acids. And, since dog’s can’t make it in their own bodies, it must come from the diet. Linoleic acid also is especially important for the health of a dog’s skin and coat because it allows the skin to become permeable to water. If your dog suffers from a dry or brittle coat, adding some hemp oil their diet could solve the problem.

Highly digestible: The nutrition in hemp is easily available without crushing, soaking or cooking the seeds. This is good news for dogs, especially those with digestive problems that have difficulty extracting and digesting nutrients from their diet.

Provides a protein punch: Hemp is higher in protein than any other plant-based source, except for soy. However, hemp is a far better choice than soy, which can cause problems such as food intolerance and disruption of the endocrine system. Soy also is typically genetically modified and can contain high levels of dangerous herbicides. Hemp contains 33g of protein per 100 grams of seeds.

Chock full of nutrients: Hemp contains the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc, vitamin E, B vitamins (including folate) and a variety of antioxidants. Hemp also is the only known plant food source to provide vitamin D3, which helps absorb calcium and promote bone growth.

Excellent source of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA): GLA helps to prevent inflammation and reduce the discomfort of arthritis.

Helps cleanse the gut: Hemp provides beneficial fiber that can help remove toxins from the GI system and regulate the digestive process.

Helps the heart: Studies conducted on both animals and humans have found that hemp seeds can help promote a healthy cardiovascular system because of their plant-based fiber content, protein and healthy fat content.
